Are you disturbed by the news of the day? Do today’s headlines seem almost entirely focused on struggle and acrimony?
One of the downsides of staying engaged in the world these days is that so much of the news seems bleak. Just a quick review of this morning’s headlines is a case in point. Millions struggle in Puerto Rico in the wake of two killer hurricanes, there’s ongoing division and strife about what constitutes Americans’ first amendment rights, cyber attacks threaten to compromise our personal information, gas is in short supply and doomsday has just been postponed again. It’s hard not to buckle under the pressure of the constant drip, drip, drip of caustic commentary fostering angst and argument in lieu of thoughtful discourse.
My intent is not to attack those who report the news or belittle the gravity of the important challenges our society faces; but to lower the volume from time to time and lighten up. I’ve learned that music, a happy melody with a friendly staccato beat, can transform even one of my darkest moods to a sense of hopefulness. It’s not that music changes what’s going on around me. It changes me. It simply lightens my load, makes me smile and helps me believe that this too shall pass.
