Honoring those Who Have Fallen, or Suffer After the Trauma of War

May 23, 2018 Leave a Comment

This Memorial Day I remember my beloved husband, and our Laura’s father, 1st Lt. James L. Hull, who was killed 47 years ago, while on a combat mission during the Vietnam War. We will never forget him. We also acknowledge all the men and women who have given their lives, both literally and figuratively, in the defense of our nation through many wars and conflicts. Thankfully, most return home safely. But some will go on to struggle with the ongoing effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome … [Read more...]

Musical Memories: Five Feet High and Rising

Five Feet High and Rising

Like millions of Americans, I’ve remained glued to the television and other news outlets chronicling the epic deluge that Hurricane Harvey has unleashed across Houston, Rockport, Galveston, and along the Gulf Shores of Texas and into Louisiana.  As a fellow Texan and an American, it’s been heart wrenching to watch the powerful destruction so easily wrought to the works of men by Mother Nature. As a lifelong educator and a parent, I am especially moved by images of babies, toddlers and … [Read more...]

Decker Family Reunion

August 24, 2017 Leave a Comment

This past weekend I had the privilege of attending the Decker reunion, a gathering of extended family members related to me on my Daddy’s side. For me, these gatherings always bring back a torrent of wonderful old memories. They also give me hope for the future, as I get to witness first-hand the enthusiasm and promise of a new generation, with all their gifts, aspirations and dreams for their own lives. Since turning 70 in June, I’ve thought a great deal about the important role various … [Read more...]

Musical Memories: Ballad of the Green Berets

August 9, 2017 Leave a Comment

With all the heightened rhetoric these days about the potential for armed conflict between the U.S. and North Korea, it seems especially fitting this week to commemorate National Purple Heart Day on August 7. This special day honors all of the brave men and women over the years who have been injured or given their lives for our country. This post specifically honors my husband, 1st Lieutenant James Larry Hull, and father to our daughter, Laura. Larry was posthumously awarded the Purple … [Read more...]

Musical Memories: Morning Has Broken

August 2, 2017 Leave a Comment

The song “Morning Has Broken” (listen here) introduced me to Cat Stevens in the 1970s. Since then, he has been one of my favorite musicians. “Morning Has Broken” was first published in 1931. An English author, Elanot Farjeon, wrote the words and they were set to the music of a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune known as “Bunessan.” This song reached number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and, in 1972, number one on the U.S. Easy Listening chart. This song was soothing and supportive … [Read more...]
