As many of my long-time friends and followers know, I have always been a passionate advocate for storytelling and writing as a means of gaining greater self-awareness and understanding about this complicated journey we call life. My inaugural book, Where the Water Meets the Sand, was a true journey across the struggles and triumphs of my life.
Now, I’m excited to be publishing my second book, Your Turn: Ways to Celebrate Life Through Storytelling, in October 2019! In this new book, I write about my personal stories to encourage readers to write about their own lives. Learning how to develop storytelling skills not only serves to better ourselves, but it also helps us heal and face life’s greatest challenges.
Over the past couple of months, certain influential people have had the chance to finish the advance reader’s copy of Your Turn. I am so happy to report that the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and I want to share some of these reviews in advance for a sneak peek at what you can expect when you purchase your copy of the book:
Featured by writer Ashley Johnson as one of Parade Magazine’s “10 Books That Will Help You Declutter Your Entire Life, Marie Kondo-Style.”
Your Turn showcased as a book in the article “8 Ways to Write Away Your Worries” that will help people suffering from anxiety “refocus on realistic solutions” and “show gratitude.”
“A well-told sage of recovery from loss and emotional breakdown and a tribute to ordinary blessings that made it possible.” Kirkus Reviews (read the entire review of Your Turn here)
More Praise for Your Turn
“Your Turn provides advice on composing…precise, telling details that truly capture one’s life journey, and for anyone wishing to tell her/his story, it’s an unusually useful and specific handbook to guide one’s writing.”
Coleen Grissom, Ph. D – Professor of English – Trinity University
“Your Turn’s friendly and accessible tone makes it seem as if you’re sitting down with a dear friend sharing stories over a cup of coffee, but Manning doesn’t shy away from the hard realities of life’s more challenging moments. The writing prompts and her examples offer readers an opportunity to truly get to know themselves through their stories, and hers.”
Bridget Boland – Modern Muse
“Drawing on her own challenging life experiences, Dr. Tyra Manning presents an invitation and a guide to all of us to celebrate our lives through storytelling. As she remembered her own good times and bad times, she was rewarded with gifts of clarity, acceptance, forgiveness, and new perspectives on life. As you review your life experiences and share them with others, you reaffirm your own life – a task well worth pursuing.”
Walter Menninger, M.D. – Menninger Clinic
Sometimes unpacking the stories that lie at our core as human beings can serve to connect us with those we know and love in new and beautiful ways. I encourage you to try it. It takes some discipline and a willingness to be vulnerable, but by chronicling and sharing your own life’s stories, you’ll find that you look at the world and those around you in a different light.
